Firebird Cigar Cutter

Firebird Cigar Cutter
For some reason I never seem to be happy with the number of cigar cutters that I have. I know I’m not alone in this obsession as I’ve seen a lot of great pictures of the collections others have. So… it was almost a given that I had to pick up the new, shiny Firebird cutter from Colibri when I saw a tweet about it. The folks at CheapHumidors.com had my order out in a jiffy and I received my cutter in about two days.
The Stats
Manufacturer: Colibri
Style: Double-guillotine switchblade
Price Paid: $19.99 (introductory price)
Warranty: 1 year
Color: Aluminum body with various colors
Max Ring Gauge: 54
The Firebird cutter comes packaged in a simple black gift box with a foam cut-out to secure the cutter. It is a very nice looking cutter with a shiny aluminum body; my model had the black finish. The black portion of the cutter seems to be a slightly tacky rubberized surface and provides a nice grip. The cutter opens easily with a slight push on the trigger and has a very solid feel when it opens. It is considerably heavier than other cutters I have and is also a bit more bulky – when carried in a front pocket it is noticeable. Once open there is a spring mechanism that offers some resistance and keeps the blades from closing. The blades are razor sharp and have delivered a quick, clean cut every time. When closed the Firebird’s blades are locked into place.
Overall the cutter has performed very well. The price point makes this one a great option if you are looking for a switchblade cutter, however it should be noted that, although more expensive, the Xikar cutters do offer a lifetime warranty as compared to one year with the Firebird. The one issue I have noticed with the cutter so far is that after several uses the screws at the bottom center begin to work loose and the cutter becomes “wobbly”. They are hex screws but I was able to tighten them with a precision screwdriver.

The Short Version
PROS:
- Inexpensive
- Razor sharp blades provide an excellent cut
- Switchblade design
CONS:
- Heavy
- Somewhat bulky
- Screws work loose after several uses
Although this didn’t take over my favorite cutter spot I do like the Firebird and would recommend it to others. At the price point it offers a great combination of design and function. Plus, if you’re a hoarder… ummm, collector of cigar cutters this is a nice one to add to the collection.

I haven’t tried this cutter yet, but if it’s anything like the last cutter I got from Colibri, you should pass. I bought their guillotine/bullet cutter…FAIL. The blade wasn’t that sharp and it was double edged so I couldn’t have it sharpened and peices of the cutter came unglued.
So if the reviewer found that the screws started to come loose, what’s next?
Plus, don’t get me started on the other Colibri products I’ve made the mistake of buying.

I haven’t owned other Colibri products so I really can’t comment on them. My review is based just on this cutter. As mentioned, it does have pros and cons – but in my opinion it’s a nice cutter for around $20.00. I’ve had issues with the screws coming loose on some cutters I paid twice as much for so I don’t see that as a fatal flaw.
what is your top cutter, if you don’t mind me asking?
I’m one of those cutter collectors myself and this one looks nice. I like the idea of something that has “weight” to it and for the money it is ripe to be bought by me.
I have the stainless steel model…not a good cutter. It has torn every cigar I have ever tried to cut with it. Oliva, Patel, Montecristo, Cohiba, Arturo Fuente… nothing can survive the blades on this thing. It pinches, pulls and ultimately rips and tears off the tip of your most prized cigs. Please don’t torture yourself trying to make this cutter work properly. Looks nice in the collection though.
