Would You Pay For the Right to Light Up?

I read an article recently where members of private clubs in Michigan (such as the VFW, American Legion, Moose and Elks clubs) are fighting against the smoking bans in their state.  Their argument is that these are private clubs, where adults choose to be a member, and choose to smoke if they want to.

In certain states businesses already use private clubs as a way to allow serving alcohol later.  Some charge a small fee, I’ve seen as low as $5.00, for a membership while others are true clubs that may charge a substantial membership fee to members.  Living in Georgia I’m one of the lucky ones, we’re still able to smoke at our B&M’s and there are quite a few restaurants, clubs and bars that are smoker-friendly.  The law in Georgia allows smoking in bars and restaurants if they are 18 and up only, it’s also allowed in a few other cases.

Some other places aren’t so fortunate and the bans are much more strict.  I’m sure the laws will continue to tighten up in all locations.  If that’s the case, would you pay a fee for the right to enjoy a cigar?  It may not be that far off that you have to make that decision.

Like you, I have plenty of smoke friendly venues to smoke in. I believe we need to continue the fight against these smoking bans.
